How much time do you put on studying the quran?

Hardly any these days. I used to put in at least a couple hours a day, sometimes even more. But I just don’t have the time any more.

I don't see anything wrong or immodest about getting on a tube naked. Also in reply to someone's comment...I wouldn't donate my bras to charity because I'm nice and don't want another woman to be tortured by them.

Sorry for the late reply, I couldn’t find my notes on chapter 2.

Verses 2/1-5 is the process humans are to follow to achieve guidance and bliss. 2/6-7 speaks of those who reject this process and the state of their hearts. 2/8-10 mentions those from the people [nās] who claim to be secure with a sense of Greater Purpose and accountability, but in reality they don’t understand. Once more a mention of corrupted hearts, showing us that blissful living must come from purifying the heart.

2/11 And when it is said to them, “Do not spread corruption [tuf’sidū] in the earth,” they say, “Only are we reformers [muṣ’liḥūn].”

Their lack of conviction and the disease in their hearts results in them working against the process of 2/1-5 but claiming otherwise. They confuse spreading fasad in the land with righteous works.

The next two verses show they consider the workers of the dīn to be fools, when in fact they are the fools.

The chapter identifies very early on one of the main challenges faced by humankind: ignorance. Many of us cause harm by acting on ignorance, and unless we correct our intentions and care for our hearts, we risk becoming arrogant towards the peace-makers who try to correct us.

Okay. Well, you should ask yourself whether being nude in your current environment would be considered immodest and then decide what you should do from there.

I kindof translate it myself when I’m studying it. For general reading I like using Muhammad Asad’s The Message of the Quran. His notes and commentary are good.

A Reformist Translation by Edip Yuksel et al is pretty good too, as is The Qur’an As It Explains Itself by Dr Shabbir Ahmed. These two attempt to minimise the effects of hadith in their explanatory notes.

I feel like when I read the Quran my understanding of it is so different to yours :(

I dunno cause socialism means v. different things in France, USA, etc. I may be a pessimist but I cant imagine any workers-based ideology being 1 strong enough 2 not corrupted for long enough… :/

Not sure I understand this..What do you mean by "not mentioned as religious traditions"? Religious figures from Christianity and Judaism (among other messengers/figures God has chosen to serve Him) are mentioned in the Quran. Do you mean we aren't meant to differentiate between them because they're all part of one monotheistic faith?

This might take me a while to explain, so I’ll leave it for now and try and write something up in the future.

But very briefly, the Quran doesn’t mention Judaism and Christianity in the same way it doesn’t mention Hinduism, Taoism or the Rastafari etc. Judaism may be a religion that emerged from the dīn inspired in Musa and Christianity may be a religion that emerged from the same dīn inspired in Isa, but the Quran doesn’t concern itself with these religions.

Communism is a stateless social order structured upon common ownership of the means of production. In other words, everything that makes a community is owned by the community. Land, rivers, roads, factories, hospitals, schools etc are managed by the people collectively and not by landlords and/or bosses who control access. Since there is free access to all these things, there is no need for rent, taxes and wages. Workers will work according to their ability because it’s in their interest to do so: all their needs will be met by everyone else in the community. For example, the doctor knows so long as she provides care to her community, her community will make sure all her needs are met i.e. she will have a house, means of transport, free bread from her local bakery etc. The local baker will make bread for free because he knows his needs are also being met, and if he ever needs the doctor he will receive her service for free. And so on. This type of exchange is called mutual aid.

Ever wonder why, if so many things are impermissible/haram according to hadith, God sort of neglected to mention them in the Quran? I never understood that, when something is strictly forbidden, God makes it absolutely clearly without a doubt in the Quran because He knows humans are fallible and need clear guidance. Why leave so many of these rules outside the Quran for the Prophet to tell the early Muslims on the off-chance that they get passed on through hearsay?? I don't get it.

I did wonder why and it didn’t make much sense to me either.

What do you make of traditionalist Muslims who point to Christian and Jewish scholarly traditions (and the impact they've had the core ideologies of these religions) as being convoluted and a source of corruption? Like, what does that say about Islamic sources that Muslims hold in high esteem alongside the Quran? It seems kind of hypocritical to me, and goes against the Quran's warning. Are we then repeating the same mistakes overtime as Christians and Jews by expanding beyond the word of God?

Haha, I’m joking. It might seem a little hypocritical but then I’m sure many Muslims would point out several differences between the scholarly tradition of Islam versus that of other religions.

This whole line of thinking, however, assumes islam (as defined by the Quran) is a continuation of Judaism and Christianity. I disagree with this completely and think this tri-religion theory is a myth. Judaism and Christianity aren’t even mentioned in the Quran as religious traditions, according to my reading, so the comparisons are irrelevant.

I agree it is loaded. Perhaps people should use the word socialism instead?

To me, it makes no sense to concentrate power in the hands of a bureaucratic class (which is what happened in the Soviet Union) and then believe power will eventually become decentralised by the good-will of those in power. State communism will always fail because it betrays the fundamental tenet of socialism: worker control.

That we’re all workers is the only thing we have in common. We can never unite under any other banner, whether that be a political ideology, a religion, race, or gender etc, but almost all of us are workers. We’re the ones who continually create and recreate society, not the politicians, capitalists and military. Despite the death of the labour movement in the 20th century in Europe and North America, workers still have the greatest potential to bring about revolutionary change in the world today.

So, which ideologies could succeed? I would personally look to any that advocate worker control as its foundation.
